Lakers Comfortably Sweep Jaguars At Home
CHICAGO – Roosevelt didn't need five sets Saturday night at the Goodman Center, easily dispatching Governors State in three sets in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
The Lakers (10-13, 6-7 CCAC) trailed just twice in the entire 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 win over the Jaguars, dropping the opening point of the second set then falling behind 5-4 in the second. Otherwise, Roosevelt played from the lead and looked confident in the big moments at the end of each set to put away Governors State. Roosevelt won the final five points of the first set and won the final four points in the second and third sets as well.
Viktoria Marysheva was the star of the Roosevelt offense with 13 kills compared to just one error for a .364 hitting percentage. Emily DeBlecourt recorded just 10 kills, but did so with a .381 attacking percentage to help the Lakers hit .309 as a team. It is the third time this season Roosevelt has recorded a team hitting percentage above .300.
Isa Grana was a steady hand at the net for the Lakers with 32 assists to once again lead the team in that category. She was also again a force at the service line with four aces, tying with Olivia Adams for the most on the team. Grana had three of those aces in the first set, two of which came during that 5-0 run to close out the opening set while breaking a 20-20 tie.
After falling behind 5-4 in the second set, the Lakers started to take over with a 6-0 run that included kills from three different players and an Adams ace. Roosevelt pulled ahead 21-15 before taking a timeout after surrendering three straight points. The break reset the momentum as DeBlecourt and Marysheva had kills on the set-ending 4-0 run.
Adams and DeBlecourt both had aces during the third set's defining 7-1 run after the teams traded points for the first six rallies. A pair of service errors and two attacking errors allowed the Jaguars to close the deficit to four, but Logan Cofield ended the match with consecutive kills to cap a 4-0 spurt.
The Lakers will close out the regular season Thursday night at home with a Senior Night showdown against Indiana South Bend with major postseason implications on the line at the Goodman Center for the 7 p.m. start.
