Lakers Women's Volleyball's Win Streak Comes to an End Against Cardinal Stritch
CHICAGO – Having won three matches in a row, including two CCAC victories, the Roosevelt University women's volleyball team was back at the Goodman Center on Thursday, September 29 to continue its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate against the Cardinal Stritch Wolves.
The opening set was a back and forth affair with the two teams trading points throughout. With the score tied at 10 apiece, a service ace by Zoe Hutchinson ignited the Lakers offense to three straight points to take a 13-10 lead. After a pair of Cardinal Stritch errors led to a Wolves timeout, a Logan Cofield Kill gave the Lakers a 20-16 advantage. Roosevelt would not be able to hang onto the lead as the Wolves tied the match at 24-24 and eventually win the first set 27-25.
Set two started off as another close contest with neither team putting scoring more than two points at a time until a couple errors saw RU down 6-9. The Lakers would storm back, getting within a point at 12-13 on a kill by senior middle blocker Alyssa Stilley and eventually taking the lead 14-13 on another kill by sophomore Viktoria Marysheva. Roosevelt would continue to grow its margin to 18-14, forcing a CSU timeout. The Wolves rallied out of the break to tie things up at 19 each with the lone Lakers point coming on a kill from Emily DeBlecourt. Cardinal Stritch scored the next four points to set up set point at 24-20, but the Lakers fought back with a pair of Jessa Henry kills. Unfortunately, it was not enough and the Wolves put the set away 25-22.
The Wolves maintained that momentum heading into the third set, getting on top early 4-1. Roosevelt battled back within one at 3-4, but the Wolves began to pull away, growing the lead to as high as seven at 11-4, causing RU to take its first timeout of the frame. Krista Norton would enter the match for the Lakers, tallying a kill and a block, the Roosevelt fell 14-25.
