Women’s Volleyball Drops Pair on Day One of SHU Tournament

ADRIAN, MICH. – The Roosevelt University women's volleyball team hit the road for their second invitational tournament of the year on Friday, September 2 at the SHU Tournament on the campus of Siena Heights University. The first day of competition had the Lakers squaring off against the Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars followed by a second match against the Knights from Kentucky Christian.

 

Match 1 – Roosevelt vs. Mount Vernon Nazarene

In the first match of the tournament, Emily DeBlecourt and Nicole Darin led the Lakers with 6 kills each, while Logan Cofield and Brooke Williams each added 5 kills of their own. Zoe Hutchinson and Jessa Henry tallied 12 assists apiece in the effort as well.

After falling in set one by a score on 25-5, the Lakers were able to take an early lead in the second set on a pair of kills from Emily DeBlecourt. However, the Lakers would not be able to maintain the lead as the Cougars battled back to win the second set by a 25-19 margin. The Lakers could not battle to a different result in the third, dropping the final set and the match 25-20.

Match 2 - Roosevelt vs. Kentucky Christian

Roosevelt looked to split the day in match two against the Kentucky Christian Knights. Logan Cofield and Brooke Williams paced the Lakers with 9 and 8 kills respectively. Zoe Hutchinson led the team with 18 assists over the course of the three-set affair. Cofield and Vaiva Blistrabas added 12 digs apiece for Roosevelt.

The Lakers nearly got into the win column in the first set, coming behind from a 6-12 deficit to take a 20-17 lead. However, Roosevelt could not close out the set, dropping the first 25-23. After losing the second set to fall behind 2-0, the Lakers built an early lead in the third. Growing the advantage to 14-8, the team held on to its lead until the very end. Up 25-24, Cofield tallied a kill to give RU the set three win. The Lakers would not be able to carry that momentum into the fourth set, and lost the match three sets to one.

The Roosevelt women's volleyball team will finish play in the Siena Heights University Tournament on Saturday, September 3. The Lakers are scheduled to take on the tournament hosts, Siena Heights at 11:00 a.m., followed by Thomas More at 1:00 p.m.
