Women's Volleyball Splits Matches on Day Two of Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougar Quad Tournament
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Roosevelt University women's volleyball team closed out the Cougar Quad Tournament, falling to host Mount Vernon Nazarene University in straight sets and defeating Asbury University (Ky.) in five sets on Saturday, October 9. The Lakers are now 3-16 overall this season.
The first match of the day versus Mount Vernon Nazarene began with a marathon opening set with the Lakers falling 33-31. Roosevelt led 19-17 late and then served for set point at 24-23, but the Cougars fought it off and eventually won the set.
The second set was tied at 10-10 before Mount Vernon Nazarene went on a 5-0 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Lakers pulled to within 17-15, but the Cougars scored eight of the final 10 points to win 25-17 to take a 2-0 match lead.
The third set was all Cougars as they scored 11 straight points to lead 18-5. The Lakers were unable to overcome this deficit, losing 25-11 to drop the match in straight sets.
In the second match of the day, the Lakers trailed the Eagles 11-9 before scoring the next three points to take a 12-11 lead. RU gained momentum late in the set and won 25-20 to take a 1-0 match lead.
The second set was a back and forth affair and the two teams were tied at 20-20 before Asbury scored the final five points to win the set 25-20 and even the match at 1-1.
The Lakers took a 15-12 advantage in the third set, but the Eagles battled back to regain the lead. However, RU came back to tie the set up at 20-20 and took a brief 23-22 lead, but the Eagles scored three straight points to win the set and lead the match 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Lakers overcame a three-point deficit to tie the set at 12-12 and proceeded to build an 18-13 advantage. Asbury closed the gap to 20-18, but the Lakers went on to win 25-20 to send the match to a fifth and deciding set.
With the final set tied up at 6-6, Roosevelt picked up some momentum on kills by Logan Cofield and Mandy Stahulak to take an 8-6 lead. The Lakers continued their run and went on to win 15-10 to take the match in five sets.
