Women's Volleyball Falls to St. Francis in Five Sets in CCAC Conference Play
CHICAGO – The Roosevelt University women's volleyball team lost a tough, five-set CCAC Conference contest to the University of St. Francis on Thursday, September 9 at the Goodman Center. The loss dropped the Lakers to 0-3 in the CCAC and to 2-9 overall.
The Lakers started off strong and jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the opening set. The Fighting Saints battled back and led 20-18, but RU fought back and tied the set at 21-21 before scoring the next four points to take a 1-0 match lead.
The second set was all St. Francis as they ran out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 25-15 to tie the match at 1-1. The third set was another tight one throughout with the Lakers trailing 18-17 late in the stanza. However, USF scored the next four points to take control and held on to win 25-20 to lead 2-1.
Roosevelt wasn't going down without a fight as the Lakers built an 11-5 advantage to open the fourth set, but the Fighting Saints clawed their way back into the set and cut the RU margin to one point at 21-20. The Lakers appeared to be pushing the match to a fifth set when they pushed their lead to 24-22, but St. Francis fought off two set points and took the lead with a chance to win the set on two match points of their own. However, the Lakers kept the match alive and won the set 28-26 on a service ace from Jessa Henry to force a fifth and deciding set.
The fifth set was another competitive affair with the teams trading leads until St. Francis took the lead for good at 11-10. RU battled until the end, trailing 14-13 before falling on the next service to lose the match in five sets.
