Martinez Qualifies For Nationals With CCAC Racewalk Victory

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Cristian Martinez won the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships' 3,000-meter racewalk on Friday to book his spot in the 2024 NAIA Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The senior, who qualified for the same event at last year's outdoor national meet, was three minutes slower than his record pace from the previous week, but it didn't matter. He led from start to finish to win by nearly two minutes over his nearest competitor. Martinez qualified to represent Roosevelt in Brookings, S.D. at the 2024 NAIA Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 1 with the race scheduled to start around 11:25 a.m.

Martinez was the only person who scored points for the men's team in the conference championship meet despite strong efforts from several other Lakers. Ashton Gray set his personal record in both the 60-meter and 200-meter sprints during the preliminary rounds. Raul Ortiz also set a pair of personal records with the sophomore setting his best time in the mile and 3,000 meters. Brandon Saavedra came the closes to adding to the point total with his ninth-place finish in the 5,000-meter race.

There were plenty of records and season bests for the women as well with three athletes earning points for the Lakers. Beatrice Bruno picked up a point with her season best in the 400 meters and Destiny Ashcraft set her best time of the season in the 800 meters to earn three points. Millicent Ghapson didn't set her personal best, but did score 1.5 points by tying for seventh in the high jump.

Angela Louis set a season best in the 200-meter preliminaries in the same race where Bruno also set a personal best. Monse Morales also finished with her best time of the season in the 800 meters before setting her personal record in the 1,000 meters. Shelsee Isassi set a personal record in the mile and Roosevelt's throwers also added to their potential with personal bests. Madalyn Smock set her mark in the weight throw while Juliana Balagat and Lisset Munoz set their records in the shot put.
