
Morales Wins Event, Lakers Ramp Up Performance In Iowa
DAVENPORT, Iowa – The Roosevelt track and field program rounded into shape for the upcoming conference championships with several standout performances at the SAU Tune Up hosted by St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa on Saturday.
Both teams finished in sixth place among eligible teams with the men scoring 15 points and the ladies scoring 24. Monse Morales won the women's 1,000-meter race in 3:38, edging out her nearest rival by three seconds. Five other women scored points for the Lakers in the event.
Angela Louis qualified for the final out of a packed field of 60-meter sprinters then finished eighth overall to earn two points. She followed up with an 11th-place finish in the 200 meters, missing out on points by half a second. Beatrice Bruno picked up a point with a ninth-place finish in the 400 meters then Destiny Ashcraft notched five points by finishing fifth in the 800-meter race. Shelsee Isassi finished seventh in the mile to earn three more points for Roosevelt, and Millicent Ghapson rounded out the scoring with a sixth-place finish in the high jump.
Cristian Martinez returned to the race walk for the first time this season and finished second to score eight points. Brandon Saavedra added three points with a seventh-place finish in the mile then added two more in the 3,000 meters. Geremy Gomez picked up a pair of points by finishing seventh in the 60-meter dash while Ashton Gray finished 0.08 seconds out of the points in the 200 meters in ninth place.
The Lakers will next compete Thursday and Friday at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships hosted by Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais.
