Martinez Wins Race Walk, Lakers Battle Elements At ONU Tiger Open

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Cristian Martinez won the 5,000-meter race walk on Saturday and was the standout performer for Roosevelt at the ONU Tiger Open hosted by Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais.

The junior from Chicago finished the race in 28:17.68, one of two top-10 finishes for the Lakers men at the meet. Kieran Cassidy finished sixth in the javelin throw with a 114-foot toss on a tough weather day for the competitors. Gabriel Gutierrez finished 20th in the discus throw and 14th in shot put while Brandon Saavedra placed 13th in the 5,000 meters.

On the women's side, Erionna Moore finished a strong 10th place in the 100 meters and 13th in the 200 meters, leading the Lakers in both events. Angela Louis was on Moore's heels in both events with 11th and 14th-place finishes, respectively. Destiny Ashcraft excelled at the middle distances after placing 11th in the 400 and 9th in the 800 meters.

Angie Delgado broke her personal record with a 21:27.06 finish in the 5,000 meters, good for 10th place in the event. Meanwhile, Lola Arreola shined both on the track and in the throwing events for Roosevelt, finishing 12th in the 1,500 meters and 15th in the shot put. Juliana Balagat threw both the shot put and discus for the Lakers, finishing 17th in both events.

The Lakers will return to Bourbonnais on Saturday for the ONU Invite for their final prep meet before the conference championships on May 5 and 6.
