Four Lakers Named To CSC Academic All-District Teams
CHICAGO – The Roosevelt tennis program had four players named to the College Sports Comminicators Academic All-District teams, the organization announced Tuesday.
Justus Peters represented the men's squad with a perfect 4.0 GPA, and from the womens team, Rebecca Geiger, Grace Hahn and Alyssa Owens earned the honorable distinction. All four Lakers played critical roles in the most successful tennis season to date for the program as the women reached the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship match for the first time while the men bowed out in the semifinals.
Geiger and Owens were both in the singles and doubles lineup for the Lakers, mostly holding down the middle of the singles order for Roosevelt. Owens was on the top doubles pair and Geiger was at the No. 3 position, but Geiger also played No. 3 singles while Owens was at the No. 4 or No. 5 position mostly. Hahn, a four-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete, played all over the singles lineup, but mainly played at No. 4 or No. 5 singles this season.
Peters was also part of the Lakers' top doubles duo on the men's side and then also played almost every match in singles play as well in the No. 3 position.
The Academic All-America program is the longest running and premier award for athletic and academic success across championship college sports in all three NCAA divisions, the NAIA, two-year colleges and Canadian institutions. It was established in 1952 and the honorees are nominated by CSC members then All-American honors are voted on by the membership as well.
In order to be named to the Academic All-District teams, a student-athlete must not only hold at least a 3.5 grade point average, but also must have either appeared in 90 percent of the team's matches this season. The list of all-district honorees is then vetted by the CSC committee, who send out a ballot for All-American honors to the membership.
