Lakers Crush Fighting Bees In CCAC Action
MOLINE, Ill. – Roosevelt easily took down St. Ambrose on Tuesday in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference dual match in Moline as the men beat the Fighting Bees 6-1 and the women sweeping St. Ambrose 7-0.
The Lakers surprisingly lost the doubles point in the men's match, putting themselves in a 1-0 hole with tight losses at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. David Hofmann and Demille Scarbello comfortably won 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. Scarbello was just as quick in singles play by claiming a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot to tie the match early. Justus Peters was right behind with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles to give the Lakers a 2-1 advantage, and Juan Pablo Espinosa won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Yazid Benchegra won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 to clinch the match officially, but Victor Dorojan and Felipe Penuela were deep in the heat of battle in the top two spots. Dorojan won his first set in a tiebreak then toughed out a 6-3 win in the second for a straight-sets win. Penuela won 6-4 in a grinding opening set before cruising to a 6-2 win in the second set.
Roosevelt dropped just five games total in singles play on the women's side after the Lakers easily cruised to the doubles point. The Lakers took the top doubles position 6-1 then won 6-2 at No. 2 and 6-0 at No. 3 to set the tone for the rest of the match.
Three Lakers won their singles matches without dropping a game as Teodora Petrica at No. 1, Alyssa Owens at No. 4 and Ximena Mercado at No. 6 all won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scorelines. Rebeca Geiger and Grace Hahn both lost a game in the first set but then dominated the rest of the way for 6-1, 6-0 victories. Fabiola Rivas at the No. 2 position won her first set 6-3 before joining the rest of her teammates with 6-0 wins in the deciding set.
The Lakers return to XS Tennis on Saturday for the final time this season for a home matchup with Olivet Nazarene starting at 2 p.m.
