Lakers Swept At Ranked Holy Cross

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Roosevelt put up a tough fight but could not overcome a pair of ranked Holy Cross squads Saturday in Notre Dame, Ind.

The Lakers men and women were both swept 4-0 by the Saints, capping off a tough week for Roosevelt in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action. On Wednesday, the men dropped a 6-1 decision at home to Judson while the women had the day off because the Eagles do not field a women's team this year.

The 22nd-ranked Saints made quick work of the Roosevelt men while threatening to add further points to their total. Holy Cross captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles though David Hofmann and Demille Scarbello were still on serve and tied 4-4 at No. 3 doubles. Scarbello fell in straight sets at No. 6 to extend the Saints lead to 2-0 then in short succession the Lakers dropped points at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The remaining matches were then halted with Holy Cross up a set and leading 4-1 in the second set at both No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions.

Roosevelt had plenty of resistance in the women's match against 19th-ranked Holy Cross, but still fell in the same 4-0 scoreline. The Saints won 6-1 and 6-2 at the top-two doubles positions, respectively, and led at the No. 3 spot 4-3 in claiming the doubles point. Two of the six singles matches were stopped in the third set and a third was stopped with Roosevelt poised to force a third set.

Quick losses at No. 5 and No. 6 singles put all the pressure on the top of the Roosevelt lineup and it nearly came to fruition. A tough call stalled all momentum for Alyssa Owens at No. 4 singles in dropping a 7-5, 6-3 match. Meanwhile, Fabiola Rivas dropped a tough 7-6 first set at 8-6 in the tiebreaker then led 4-3 in the second set when the match was stopped.

At the No. 1 spot, Teodora Petrica battled back from losing the first set 6-1 to win the second set 6-3 and had a game point to go up 4-2 in the third set. Similarly at No. 3 singles, Rebeca Geiger lost the first set 6-2 then won the second set 7-5 to force a third. In the final set, Geiger was leading 3-1 when the match was halted.

The Lakers jump right back into conference action Tuesday when it travels to Iowa to face St. Ambrose.
