Petrica Knocks Off No. 14 Player To Lift Lakers
CHICAGO – Teodora Petrica's straight sets victory at No. 1 singles lifted Roosevelt to a 4-3 win over Cornerstone on Saturday in a non-conference match at XS Tennis.
The Lakers' top singles player was facing off against Cornerstone's 14th-ranked Laura Matamoros, and took the opening set 6-4. She followed up with a 7-5 win in the second set to give the Lakers the first of four wins at singles to overcome a loss in doubles action.
Fabiola Rivas went to three sets to claim a point at No. 2 singles, defeating her opponent 5-7, 7-5, 10-8. Alexandra Chavez, the only Lakers player to play singles and not doubles, quickly raced past her foe at No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-0 to set the stage for Alyssa Owens at No. 5. Owens dropped the opening set 6-1 before rallying to claim the second set 6-3 to bring up the deciding tiebreaker. Owens outlasted her opponent 11-9 in the third-set tiebreak to seal the match.
