Lakers Sweep Past Pioneers, Big Blue

CHICAGO – The Roosevelt tennis teams played two tight matches Friday and Saturday, outlasting both Carroll University and Millikin on consecutive days.

The men endured a marathon match Friday against Carroll that lasted more than seven hours before securing a 5-4 win. They followed up with a more comfortable 6-3 victory over Millikin to move to 2-1 on the season. The ladies had a much easier time picking up two victories, taking down Carroll 8-1 and beating Millikin 7-2.

The Lakers and Pioneers battled for most of Friday night with the bottom of the lineup carrying Roosevelt to victory. Roosevelt won the second and third doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead then clinched the victory with victories at the fourth, fifth and sixth doubles positions. Abhay Singh took home No. 4 singles in straight sets and Demille Scarabello trounced at No. 6 in two sets as well. Match point was decided by Juan Pablo Espinosa's 11-9 victory in the third-set tiebreak at No. 5 singles.

Roosevelt was aided by three forfeits against Millikin to take a 3-0 lead then added a massive 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and a straight-sets victory for Espinosa to clinch the match. Yazid Benchegra also took home a three-set triumph at No. 1 singles to add a sixth point for the Lakers.

The women were dominant in both matches over the weekend, claiming 10 of the 12 singles matches in straight sets. Alejandra Chavez needed three sets to win her singles match at No. 6 against Carroll, but eight other sets in that match were decided by 6-3 scorelines or better. The Lakers secured five 6-0 sets against Millikin in singles play with Chavez and Alyssa Owens both claiming victories without dropping a  game.
