Roosevelt's Season Ends With Quarterfinals Defeat

DAVENPORT, Iowa – A late goal from Daisy Hernandez-Loya was not enough as Roosevelt's season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to St. Ambrose on Friday night in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinals in Davenport, Iowa.

Roxana Herrera kept the eighth-seeded Lakers (6-10-0) in the match early with five first-half saves on nine total shot attempts. Roosevelt forced two saves out of the Fighting Bees' keeper in the first half, but the Lakers still trailed 1-0 at the break. St. Ambrose doubled the lead early in the second half, sparking a resurgence from the Lakers.

Hernandez-Loya gave the Lakers life with her goal in the 77th minute off the assist from Karen Salgado. Unfortunately for Roosevelt, that was the final shot it could muster on goal as it fell to 0-4 all-time in the CCAC Tournament. Herrera finished with seven total saves in the match, which gave glimpses of hope for the future.

Roosevelt will now build off this season as it prepares for its first season in NCAA Division II next year in the Great Lakers Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Lakers started nine freshmen or sophomores in Friday's match against St. Ambrose, and were missing freshman Kyra Cruickshank, who also started a majority of the games this season. Captain Paola Macias will also return to Roosevelt for her senior year.

However, the Lakers will say goodbye to seniors Destiny Ashcraft, Nyah Bejarano, Darian Lucas, Anahi Valeria Nunez and Laura Saucedo, who all played their final games with the program Friday.
