Herrera Earns First CCAC Weekly Honor After Standout Performance
CHICAGO – Roosevelt sophomore goalkeeper Roxana Herrera was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer Defensice Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
The Chicago native backstopped the Lakers to a 2-0 win over Indiana Northwest last Saturday with six saves to help Roosevelt secure its spot in the CCAC Tournament. The sophomore did so while the Lakers were down a player for the final 35 minutes of the game then down two players for the last 25 minutes of action to help preserve an early lead.
Herrera made five of her saves in the second half of the win over the RedHawks, including four after Roosevelt went down two players. She preserved a 1-0 lead with a pair of big stops in the final 10 minutes of action then added a third save after the Lakers scored the insurance marker. She was also aided by a pair of defensive blocks from her teammates in the win.
"Roxy's recognition is a product of not only her outstanding play, but also that of her teammates," Roosevelt head coach Tom Czop said. "She and her teammates stepped up and showed true heart and grit to get the result needed to advance to the conference tournament and postseason."
It is the first weekly honor of Herrera's career and the first weekly honor for the Lakers in two years. Herrera enters the conference tournament with a 1.46 goals against average and an .750 save percentage with three shutouts in 12 starts for the Lakers this season.
Roosevelt is the No. 8 seed for the CCAC Tournament and will face top-seeded St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa on Friday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
