SYLVANIA, Ohio – Roosevelt steadied itself in the second half of its 4-0 season-opening loss to Lourdes on Sunday in Sylvania, Ohio.
The Grey Wolves scored all four of their goals in the first half, including two in a span of 2:25, as part of a dominant effort in the opening 45 minutes. The Lakers (0-1-0) picked up their effort after allowing the first three goals with three of their four corner kicks and two of their three shots on goal all coming after Lourdes' third tally.
Sophomore goalkeeper Roxana Herrera entered the game in the second half and made three saves in her 45 minutes of action. Senior Gaby Aguinaga-Hernandez made a late save in the first half to be saddled with a tough loss in the opener for Roosevelt. Neither goalie was aided by Lourdes outshooting the Lakers in both halves to finish with a 13-9 edge in shot attempts.
Roosevelt picked up the pressure on the Grey Wolves' goal in the final 10 minutes to force a pair of saves from the Lourdes goalkeeper. The Lakers also were able to force more of Lourdes' attempts to miss the net in the second half as they look to build towards conference play next month.
The Lakers return to action Saturday evening in Arlington Heights with their home opener at 6 p.m. against Siena Heights at Morris Field.
