Women's Soccer Closes Out 2022 Season With 11-0 Win Over Indiana South Bend to Celebrate Senior Day

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Roosevelt University women's soccer team celebrated "Senior Day" and closed out the 2022 season with a convincing 11-0 victory over CCAC Conference foe Indiana University South Bend on Saturday, October 29 at Morris Field.

The Lakers got off to a fast start and in the third minute, Lola Arreola slipped by two defenders and hit a shot off the crossbar with Meaghan Smith's rebound volley was blocked by a defender on the goal line, but Ashley Walker headed in that rebound for her first career collegiate goal.  A minute and a half later, Smith stole the ball from a Titans' defender in the penalty box and beat another defender before powering a shot into the far corner for a 2-0 lead.  The goal was Smith's team-leading seventh of the season.

In the 19th minute, freshman defender Mackenzie Alvarez picked up a loose ball at midfield and proceeded to carry it through and playing a give and go with Lexy Langloss before beating two more defenders and slotting a shot into the corner for her second goal of the year.  Just under four minutes later, Lola Arreola headed a Smith corner kick off a defender and in for a 4-0 lead and her fourth goal of the season.

Roosevelt was held off the scoreboard for the next 15 minutes, but Valeria Nunez placed a shot into the corner from a Nyah Bejarano pass for her first goal of 2022 in the 37th minute.  Four minutes later, Darian Lucas beat a defender in the box and was taken down for a penalty kick.  Laura Saucedo was chosen to take the kick and calmly placed the ball into the side netting for her first goal of the year and a 6-0 advantage.

With under a minute left to play in the first half, Ashley Luvianos poked a loose ball to Destiny Ashcraft, who played a ball to the back post that made its way into the corner for her second goal of the year and a 7-0 half-time lead.

The Lakers continued their offensive domination to begin the second half with Lola Arreola dribbling down the goal line and laying off a pass for Frances Montoya, who slotted it home for an 8-0 lead just under three minutes into the second half.

RU controlled and possessed the ball the entire second half and found the net again in the 73rd minute when Montoya chipped a ball into the box and Lexy Langloss flicked it over the Titans' keeper with her head for a 9-0 margin.

Five minutes later, Ashley Luvianos fired a shot to the back post off a corner kick and Emilyn Ramirez redirected the shot with her left foot for her first collegiate goal and a double-digit RU lead.  The Lakers closed out their scoring in the 81st minute when Nyah Bejarano slipped a nifty header into the far post off a Laura Saucedo cross for her second goal of 2022 and the 11-0 final score.

Freshman goalkeeper Roxana Herrera earned her fourth shutout of the year while not having to make a save in the match.

Following the season finale win, the Lakers coaches and players celebrated their 2022 senior class in a postgame ceremony.  Seniors Lola Arreola, Abi Arriaga, Mayeri Diaz, Lexy Langloss, Frances Montoya, Yamilet Oliveros, Yazmin Rojas, Meaghan Smith, and Ashley Walker were honored and recognized.

The Lakers finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 5-7-4 and a conference record of 5-5-3, tying them with Holy Cross College for eighth place in the final standings.  However, RU lost out on the final spot in the CCAC Conference Tournament by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker due to their loss to Holy Cross earlier this season.
