Lakers Battle Lourdes & Heat to Scoreless Draw in Women's Soccer Home Opener

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Roosevelt University women's soccer team hosted Lourdes University (Ohio) in its 2022 home opener and the two teams not only battled each other, but also the heat and humidity in a scoreless draw on Saturday, September 3 at Morris Field.  The Lakers are now 0-1-1 to begin the new season.

The Lakers got off to a sluggish start in the first half, but eventually took control of the period, outshooting the Grey Wolves 7-3 and holding a 3-0 corner kick edge.  However, Lourdes turned the tables in the second half, holding a 5-2 shot advantage, but neither team could find the net in the 90 minutes played.

KEY STATS

• Roxana Herrera started in goal for the Lakers & played the entire 90 minutes, making six saves to earn her first collegiate shutout in her first collegiate start
• Meaghan Smith & Griselda Gurrola both registered two shots for RU
• RU defenders Mackenzie Alvarez, Destiny Ashcraft, & Frances Montoya played all 90 minutes, while Mayeri Diaz played 77 minutes to support Herrera in her shutout bid
• RU held a 9-8 shot advantage in the contest

The Lakers host Thomas More University (Ky.) on Saturday, September 10 at Morris Field.  Kick-off is set for 3pm and is the opening game of a soccer doubleheader with the men's teams squaring off at 5:30pm.
