Women's Soccer Sets Program Record for Wins In a Season With CCAC Conference Victory Over Saint Xavier
CHICAGO – The Roosevelt University women's soccer team set a program record for wins in a season, with a 3-2 victory over Saint Xavier University on Wednesday, October 20 in a CCAC Conference match at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. The Lakers are now 5-4-1 in conference play and 8-6-1 overall on the season.
The Lakers did not start the game off on the right foot, allowing the Cougars to score just 15 seconds into the contest. However, Roosevelt answered back just less than four minutes later when a Marbella Rodriguez shot was saved by the Saint Xavier goalkeeper, but Meaghan Smith put in the rebound for her team leading seventh goal of the year.
Roosevelt took a 2-1 lead 18 minutes later when Ashley Capetillo fired in a shot from 25 yards out, and then the senior followed up with her second goal of the game and fourth of the season when she slotted in a Marbella Rodriguez cross for a 3-1 advantage. The Lakers would maintain their 3-1 lead into the half-time break.
Six and a half minutes into the second half, Saint Xavier cut the Roosevelt lead to 3-2 on a 25 yard shot from the left side that beat goalkeeper Gaby Aguinaga-Hernandez. However, the Lakers were able to control most of the second half and limit the Cougars opportunities, holding on for the 3-2 league victory.
