Lakers Topple Olivet Nazarene 3-1 for CCAC Conference Victory in Women's Soccer
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Roosevelt University women's soccer team picked up an important CCAC Conference victory in its quest for a postseason berth with a 3-1 win over Olivet Nazarene University by the score of 3-1 on Saturday, October 16 at Morris Field. The Lakers are now 4-4-1 in the CCAC and 7-6-1 overall, tying the program record for wins in a season at seven.
The Lakers went on the attack from the opening whistle and took a 1-0 lead just nine minutes into the game when Meaghan Smith pounced on a loose ball off a corner kick to score her sixth goal of the season. Just over six minutes later, Ashley Capetillo doubled the Lakers lead with a left-footed shot over the goalkeeper's head for her second goal of the year on an assist from Anahi Cerda. That assist was Cerda's seventh of the season, tying her for the program record for assists in a season.
However, that two-goal lead lasted only six minutes as the Tigers scored against the run of play to make it a 2-1 margin. The half ended with that same score despite RU outshooting ONU 15-5 in the stanza.
The second half was a more even affair, but it was the Lakers who found the back of the net again with Marbella Rodriguez knocking in an Alexis Gonzalez cross in the 66th minute for her fifth goal of the year, restoring their two-goal lead. Both teams had chances in the final 24 minutes, but both were held scoreless for the 3-1 final score.
