Women's Soccer Defeats Governors State for CCAC Conference Victory
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Roosevelt University women's soccer team knocked off Governors State University by the score of 2-1 in a CCAC Conference match on Wednesday, October 6 at Morris Field. The victory evened the Lakers conference record at 3-3 and raised their overall record to 6-5 on the year.
The game was a tale of two halves with the Lakers controlling play in the first 45 minutes, holding a 16-7 shot advantage during the period. Roosevelt took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Paola Macias fired a shot into the near post for her second goal of the season. However, the Jaguars evened the score at 1-1 just under three minutes later, but the Lakers regained the lead in the 27th minute on a 25-yard shot by Meaghan Smith of an Anahi Cerda assist. The goal was the fourth of the year for Smith and the Lakers led 2-1 at the break.
The second half saw the Jaguars go on the offensive, pushing for the tying goal and outshooting the Lakers 14-7 in the final 45 minutes. RU goalkeeper Gaby Aguinaga-Hernandez and her backline teammates were up to the task though, and held Governors State off the board to earn the conference win.
