Late Surge Propels Lakers Past RedHawks

GARY, Ind. – Roosevelt's strong fourth quarter pushed the Lakers to a 68-58 win over Indiana Northwest on Thursday night in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action in Gary, Ind.

Jayla Turchin scored 10 of her team-high 25 points in the final 10 minutes to help the Lakers (8-9, 6-3 CCAC) build a 12-point lead midway through the fourth quarter after leading by three after 30 minutes. The senior from Evanston made five of her seven 3-point attempts in the game to extend her streak to three straight games with at least 20 points. Turchin also added five of her eight rebounds in the fourth to lead Roosevelt to its third straight win and sixth victory in its last eight contests.

Ella Pritchard and Malou Savanna joined Turchin in double figures with 11 points each with the duo contributing in different ways. Savanna knocked down three 3-pointers for the majority of her points while Pritchard converted 5 of 6 from the free throw line and also added four rebounds and a pair of steals off the bench.

Six players had at least two steals in the contest, led by three apiece from Jalyssa Carrasco, Kristen Keys and Marie Outlay. Carrasco was again a jack of all trades for the Lakers with the ball in her hands, scoring five points, grabbing eight rebounds and assisting on six baskets.

Roosevelt took control of the game towards the end of the second quarter with Keys and Carrasco making shots on consecutive possessions to give the Lakers a six-point lead. The advantage would grow to nine by halftime then Roosevelt scored the first four points of the second half to take its largest lead of the game. The RedHawks took their final lead of the game late in the third quarter, but Turchin answered 12 seconds later with a 3-pointer and followed up with another triple in the final minute of the quarter.

The Lakers are off to their best start to a CCAC campaign in six years when they began the year 7-3 in conference play. This year's squad will try to match the 2017-18 team on Saturday when Roosevelt travels to South Bend, Ind. to face Holy Cross at noon in another conference contest.
