Lakers Fall Just Short On Road Against Jaguars

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Jayla Turchin's double-double off the bench was not enough for Roosevelt in a 54-49 setback against Governors State on Wednesday night in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action in University Park.

The Lakers (1-7, 0-2 CCAC) grinded out an early 9-7 lead after the first quarter, and the defense continued to lock down the Jaguars in the second. Roosevelt held Governors State without a point for the first seven minutes of the second quarter and built up a 15-point advantage in that span. Grace Beyer's layup at the buzzer gave the Lakers a 10-point lead at halftime after holding the Jaguars to 24.1 percent shooting in the first half.

Governors State was never able to take the lead in the third quarter as Roosevelt responded to every run with a critical basket to keep its edge with 10 minutes left. The fourth quarter was more of a back-and-forth affair with the lead switching hands four times inside the final two minutes.

Turchin scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 27 minutes of action while Brilan McCory led the Lakers with 14 points. Ella Pritchard scored six points and grabbed six boards to help Roosevelt secure a 46-41 edge on the glass. Roosevelt was able to nab 17 offensive rebounds in the game and limited itself to a season-low 12 turnovers.

The Lakers return to action Saturday afternoon at the Goodman Center when they welcome Calumet St. Joseph for a 1 p.m. tipoff in CCAC play.
