Women's Basketball Snaps Six Game Losing Streak With 71-67 CCAC Conference Victory Over Cardinal Stritch
MILWAUKEE – The Roosevelt University women's basketball team overcame an 18-point third quarter deficit to defeat Cardinal Stritch University by the score of 71-67 on Saturday, February 12 to earn a CCAC Conference victory at Panella Court. The Lakers are now 7-13 in conference play and 8-16 overall this season.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair early on and the Lakers took a 12-9 lead after an Amelia McNutt free throw with 4:08 to go. However, the Wolves closed out the quarter on a 9-3 run to go up 18-15 at the end of the period.
The Wolves continue to hold the lead for the duration of the second quarter and led by as many as 16 points at 37-21 with 2:36 remaining. The Lakers were able to cut the margin to 37-25 at the half.
Cardinal Stritch scored the first six points of the third quarter to build its largest lead of the game at 43-25 just over a minute in, but Roosevelt went on a run late in the quarter. The Lakers closed the gap to 49-45 and trailed 51-45 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lakers continued to chip away at the lead to begin the final stanza, tying the contest up at 52-52 on a McNutt three-pointer with 7:47 left to go. However, the Wolves regained the lead and were up 63-58 with 4:38 to play, but the Lakers got a layup from Beatrice Bruno, a free throw by Gabrielle Beggs, and a three-pointer from Shawna Conger to take a 64-63 lead with 3:21 on the clock.
Stritch went back ahead 65-64 and Roosevelt answered with two Conger free throws, two Bruno free throws, and a jump shot from Nicole Poole in the final minutes to lead 70-65 with 30 seconds left to play. The Lakers defense came through at the end and the visitors held on for the 71-67 victory.
