Women's Basketball Drops CCAC Conference Contest 65-62 to Trinity International

CHICAGO – The Roosevelt University women's basketball team lost a CCAC Conference contest to Trinity International University by the score of 65-62 on Saturday, February 5 at the Goodman Center.  The Lakers fell to 7-14 overall and to 6-11 in the CCAC.

The Lakers broke a 4-4 tie early in the first quarter on a three-point shot from Gabrielle Beggs, but the Trojans then scored the next six points to lead 10-7 with 6:20 to go.  Roosevelt pulled to within 12-11 with 2:35 left on a Mallory Hawkins layup, however, Trinity International built an 18-13 advantage with 1:25 on the clock.  Beggs came through with a layup for the Lakers with eight seconds remaining, but the Trojans answered with a two-pointer at the buzzer to lead 20-15.

Both teams struggled offensively early in the second quarter before Trinity International increased its lead to 29-20 just over five minutes into the second half.  The Lakers closed the gap to 31-27 after a jumper by Moe Milton and a three from Beggs.  However, the Trojans went on a 7-2 run to lead 38-29 with 30 seconds left in the first half, but Hawkins scored on a layup with just two seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 38-31 at the half.

The Lakers came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 11-3 behind nine points from Amelia McNutt to take a 42-41 lead with 4:02 to go.  However, the Trojans answered back to take a 47-42 advantage and led 51-48 at the end of the quarter.

Milton and Shawna Conger hit back-to-back buckets to start the fourth quarter to give the Lakers a 52-51 lead, and RU later led 59-56 with 6:23 to play on a McNutt layup.  The Trojans then scored the next seven points to regain the lead and hold a 63-59 advantage with 3:17 left.  Beggs knocked down a three-pointer to pull RU to within 63-62 with just over three minutes remaining, and both teams struggled offensively down the stretch.  However, the Trojans connected on two free throws with just 14 seconds to play to seal the 65-62 victory.
