Women's Basketball Earns 78-70 CCAC Conference Victory Over Judson
ELGIN, Ill. – The Roosevelt University women's basketball team won its second consecutive game with a 78-70 CCAC Conference victory over Judson University on Monday, January 24 at the Lindner Fitness Center. The victory raised the Lakers league record to 6-7 and their overall record to 7-10 on the year.
Judson jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the opening quarter, but Shawna Conger knocked down four straight free throws and Gabrielle Beggs add another free throw to cut the deficit to 12-10 with 5:37 to go. The Eagles immediately increased their lead to 17-10, but the Lakers cut the margin to three points at 21-18 on a Nicole Poole three-pointer with 2:35 remaining. However, Judson added a bucket late to hold a 21-18 lead heading into the second quarter.
Conger hit a three-pointer and Ariyah Honeysucker scored on a layup to tie the game up at 23-23, and then Amelia McNutt also hit a three and Mallory Hawkins added a layup to put the visitors up 28-25 with 6:28 left in the first half. Judson then went on a 9-2 run to take a 34-30 advantage, but Conger added two three-pointers and Poole added another late three to give RU a 43-36 half-time lead.
Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter, but the Lakers pushed their lead to 52-42 on another Poole three-point shot and led 57-48 at the end of the stanza.
The Lakers increased their lead to 11 points at 59-48 to begin the fourth quarter on two Conger free throws and then a McNutt three-pointer gave RU its largest lead of the game at 68-55 with 5:20 to play. Judson attempted a late rally, cutting the margin down to six points with 14 seconds on the clock, but Conger came through again with a pair of free throws to seal the 78-70 victory.
