Lakers Take Down Governors State 62-51 for CCAC Conference Victory in Women's Basketball

CHICAGO – The Roosevelt University women's basketball team earned a 62-51 CCAC Conference victory over Governors State University on Saturday, December 4 at the Goodman Center.  The win raised the Lakers conference record to 3-4 and their overall record to 4-6.

The Lakers jumped out to a 5-0 lead to begin the contest on a Shawna Conger three-pointer and two free throws from Amelia McNutt.  The Jaguars came back with the next four points, but the Lakers stretched their lead to 15-8 on another Conger three with 3:57 to go and led 16-10 at the end of the opening quarter. 

Two minutes into the second quarter, Conger connected on another three-pointer to give the Lakers a 21-12 advantage, but then the Jaguars pulled to within 23-20.  Roosevelt increased their lead to nine points on two occasions later in the quarter and took a 33-25 advantage into the locker room at the half.

The Lakers opened up a 12-point lead at 40-28 on a three-pointer from Gabrielle Beggs just over two minutes into the third quarter.  Governors State could not get any closer than seven points in the period and Roosevelt ended the stanza up 49-38.

CeCe Pope scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to give the Lakers some breathing room with a 53-38 lead.  RU maintained a double-digit lead until the Jaguars cut the deficit to 55-47 with 4:12 left to play, and GSU got to within seven points at 57-50 with 1:25 left on the clock.  However, the Lakers held the visitors off down the stretch for the 62-51 conference win.
