Women's Basketball Suffers CCAC Conference Overtime Loss to Holy Cross

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Roosevelt University women's basketball team fell to Holy Cross College (Ind.) in overtime by the score of 79-74 in a CCAC Conference contest on Wednesday, December 1 at McKenna Arena.  The loss dropped the Lakers conference record to 2-4 and their overall record to 3-6 on the year.

Holy Cross scored the first four points of the game and led 8-2 before the Lakers cut the deficit to 12-10 at the end of the first quarter. 

The Saints pushed their lead to 16-10 to open the second quarter, but the Lakers tied the game at 16-16 on two free throws from Shawna Conger and back-to-back baskets by Jessica White.  However, Holy Cross outscored Roosevelt 14-4 the rest of the stanza to lead 30-20 at the half.

Halfway through the third quarter, the Lakers put things together offensively and came back to even things up at 40-40 on a Conger jump shot with 2:49 to play in the period.  With the game tied at 44-44 with 1:46 remaining, the Lakers scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 51-44 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.

The Lakers increased their lead to 10 points on a Nicole Poole three-pointer just under a minute into the final quarter and then led 64-52 with 5:31 left to play on two free throws from Gabrielle Beggs.  However, the Saints scored 12 straight points to tie the game at 64-64 and had a chance to take the lead at the line with just four seconds left to play, but the home team missed both shots and the game went to overtime.

Holy Cross carried the momentum into the beginning of overtime, building a 73-65 lead in the first two minutes of the extra period.  The Lakers cut the deficit to three points on three occasions, including at 77-74 with 28 seconds left on the clock, but the Saints closed out the game for the 79-74 victory.
