Sisson Pitches Shutout in Game One; Lakers Split CCAC Doubleheader at Calumet St. Joseph
ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Roosevelt University softball team split a CCAC Conference doubleheader against Calumet St. Joseph on Tuesday, April 12. The outcomes moved the Lakers conference record to 3-6 and their overall record to 10-13 on the year.
Game one was a pitcher's duel. The Lakers got off to a promising start when Athena Pomele-Pen led off the game with a single and Jessica Schneider followed up with a single of her own. However, the Lakers were unable to capitalize, leaving the inning emptyhanded. On the other side of the ball, Kate Sisson pitched a gem for the Lakers, starting with two strikeouts in the bottom of the first.
Neither team was able to muster much offensively throughout the contest. To start the seventh inning, two Crimson Wave errors left Lakers at first and second, and Schneider singled to load the bases. With two outs, Kirstin Fudge was able to work a walk, scoring Ashlyn Kitter for the game-winning run. Sisson closed the game out as strong as she started, striking out her sixth batter of the game to solidify the 1-0 win. The complete game shutout was Sisson's third win of the year.
Game two also started in promising fashion for the Lakers as Anaisa Lozada reached safely on a Crimson Wave error before Pomele-Pen moved her to third on a double to right field. With runners in scoring position, Fudge hit a fly to left that was deep enough to score Lozada for the first run of the game.
After the Crimson Wave took a 2-1 lead in the second, the Lakers returned the favor with two runs of their own on a third inning double by Destini Nolan. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Crimson Wave's bats would get red hot in the bottom of the third, scoring three and six runs in the third and fourth inning respectively. With the game out of reach, Calumet St. Joseph went on to win game two 13-5.
