Lakers Drop CCAC Conference Softball Doubleheader to Trinity Christian
HAMMOND, Ind. – The Roosevelt University softball team suffered a CCAC Conference doubleheader sweep at the hands of Trinity Christian College on Saturday, April 9, losing both games by the score of 6-3 at Dowling Park in Hammond, Ind. The losses dropped the Lakers conference record to 2-3 and their overall record to 9-10 on the year.
In game one, both teams were held scoreless for the first two innings before the Lakers struck first with a solo run in the third. Athena Pomele-Pen singled home Sabrina Treccani, who had led off with a base hit of her own. However, the Trolls answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a base hit and an error.
Roosevelt regained the lead in the fifth inning after Kassie Kawka singled to lead off, stole second, and scored on a fielder's choice by Jessica Schneider. Trinity Christian once again answered, but this time the home team scored three runs on three hits and an error to take a 4-2 advantage.
The Lakers cut the deficit to 4-3 in the sixth inning after Schneider drove in Brielle Carre with a base hit, but once again, the Trolls added runs in the bottom half of the inning. This time, Trinity Christian scored two runs on one hit and four walks for the 6-3 margin.
Game two of the day saw the Lakers jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Pomele-Pen kept up her hot streak, knocking a double to score Kawka and Kelly Farmer. Pomele-Pen proceeded to steal third and score on an Emily Zuniga base hit.
Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring the Lakers could manage in the game, while the Trolls were able to score a solo run in the third and five more runs in the fourth off of RU starter Kate Sisson for the 6-3 victory.
