Softball Splits Doubleheader With 4-2 Victory Over Dickinson State & 7-4 Loss to Aquinas

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Roosevelt University softball team split a pair of games in Tucson, Ariz. on Friday, March 11, beating Dickinson State University (N.D.) by the score of 4-2 and losing to Aquinas University (Mich.) by the score of 7-4.  The doubleheader split kept the Lakers overall record even at 6-6 this season.


DICKINSON STATE GAME RECAP

The Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a solo homerun by Kirstin Fudge.  However, the Blue Hawks manufactured a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1, and added another run in the third to take a 2-1 lead.

Dayton Elliott shut down Dickinson State the rest of the way to earn her third win of the season, while Roosevelt added single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to earn the 4-2 win.

In the fourth inning, Jessica Schneider singled home Emily Zuniga, who singled earlier and advanced into scoring position on an error. Athena Pomele-Pen led off the fifth with a triple down the right field line and scored on a Kelly Farmer ground out for a 3-2 Lakers lead.  In the sixth, Zuniga reached base on another single and advanced into scoring position on a fielder's choice before scoring on a Fudge base hit.

AQUINAS GAME RECAP

Aquinas opened up the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning, but the Lakers came back with a run of their own in the second inning when Ashlyn Kitter tripled home Kassie Kawka, who had reached base on a walk.

The Saints answered with two more runs on three hits in the top of the third to increase their lead to 4-1.  However, Roosevelt cut the margin to 4-3 with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Jessica Schneider, Kirstin Fudge, and Athena Pomele-Pen led off the inning with three straight singles, scoring Schneider with the first run.  Anaisa Lozada singled later in the inning to bring in Fudge for the second run of the inning.

In the fifth inning, Aquinas once again upped its lead by scoring three runs on three hits to increase the margin to 7-3.  The Lakers got one run back in the sixth after Lozada singled, Kawka doubled, and Kitter grounded out to drive in Lozada.  However, Roosevelt was unable to score again in the inning or in the seventh, losing 7-4.
