Men's Volleyball Falls In Four Sets To Aquinas In Non-Conference Competition

CHICAGO – The Roosevelt University men's volleyball team fell in a hard-fought contest with Aquinas College, losing in four sets on Friday, March 4 at the Goodman Center.  The Lakers are now 0-14 overall on the season.

The Saints got off to a hot start, taking a 6-0 lead on the Lakers. Roosevelt rallied to cut the lead to 12-9 behind strong serves from Tony Galeana. The Lakers were able to get as close as 16-14, however, the Aquinas offensive attack proved to be too much in propelling them back to a 21-16 lead. The Saints did not look back, eventually winning set one 25-18.

The Lakers broke out in set two taking a 5-2 advantage behind two kills from Shawn McCarthy and a huge block by Terrance Young Jr. However, Aquinas went on a quick spurt to take a 6-5 lead. After going back and forth for several points, the Lakers went on a scoring spree, taking a 19-12 lead. Aquinas crept back into the set, but the Lakers' margin proved to be to much for the Saints. McCarthy put the set away with a kill to win the set 25-18 and even the match at 1-1.

In the third set, a quick rally by the visitors led to a 5-2 start for the Saints. Aquinas continued to surge, increasing the Lakers' deficit to 16-7 and forcing a timeout from the Lakers bench. The Saints finished the set strong, winning 25-10 to go up 2-1 in the match.

The Saints went on the offensive to open the fourth set, breaking out to a 3-0 start. The Lakers fought back to tie the match at 7-7, eventually taking a 11-7 lead. However, after trailing 14-8, Aquinas rallied back to tie the set 17-17. After going ahead 18-17, the Saints never looked back, closing out the match with a 25-18 victory.
