Lakers Take Down Fighting Saints In CCAC Opener

JOLIET, Ill. – Roosevelt's tennis program started off Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on a positive note with both the men and women defeating St. Francis on Saturday in the conference opener in Joliet.

The men's match was stopped after the Lakers clinched the match at 4-0 then the women followed with a 5-2 win over the Fighting Saints. Both teams claimed the doubles point then began singles play up 2-0 with a walkover at No. 6 singles.

The Lakers men didn't need the forfeit at No. 3 doubles to claim the point as both of the top two doubles partnerships won their matches. Victor Dorojan teamed up with Felipe Penuela to win 6-3 at No. 1 then Justus Peter and Yazid Benchegra won 6-4 at No. 2. Penuela won his first set 6-2 at the top singles position, but before he could move onto the second set, Dorojan claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and Benchegra won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

Roosevelt needed the forfeit to take the doubles point on the women's side with the two teams splitting the other two matches. Fabiola Rivas and Ximena Mercado won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles to solidify the point for the Lakers. The Lakers then dropped the first two singles matches as well to tie the match at 2-2, but pulled away with wins at the other three competitive singles positions.

Rebeca Geiger shut out her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles then Alejandra Chavez sealed the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6. Alyssa Owens then rounded out the final score with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.

The Lakers men will host Judson at 10 a.m. Wednesday at XS Tennis while the women return to the court Friday at Holy Cross.
