Lakers Open Season With Losses At Purdue Northwest
PARK FOREST, Ill. – The Roosevelt tennis programs began their season Friday afternoon with losses to Purdue Northwest at the Park Forest Tennis Club in Park Forest.
Jorge Gutierrez served up a victory at No. 4 singles for the men for the only point the Lakers would score in a 6-1 loss to the Pride. The junior won his match 6-2, 6-1 to even up the score for Roosevelt after the Lakers dropped both of the competitive doubles matches to lose the doubles point. Shortly after Gutierrez finished up his victory, Sebastien Valdenaire dropped his first match with the Lakers 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Justin Magale lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles then Conor Pacelli fell 6-0, 6-1 at the top singles spot.
The Lakers women were shut out 7-0 despite a tremendous fight at the top-two singles spots from Fabiola and Maria Rivas. At No. 1 singles, Maria Rivas fought to a valiant 6-3, 6-2 loss while her sister battled 6-3-, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. The sisters also played No. 1 doubles together and fell 6-2. Grace Hahn lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Dianna Sangabriel lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. Hahn and Sangabriel also lost 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Roosevelt forfeited the points at No. 5 and No. 6 singles in both the men's and women's matches, and also forfeited the No. 3 doubles spot in both matches.
The Lakers men will return to the court Wednesday at Lake Forest College while the women play against March 11 against Millikin in Decatur.
