
Lakers Swept By Knights In Home Series
BENSENVILLE, Ill. – Roosevelt's ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team struggled to generate enough offense while getting swept by Calvin over the weekend at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.
The Lakers started off strong in Friday's matchup with a pair of power play goals a little more than four minutes apart. Griffin Lehet opened the scoring off assists from Danny Bdzoch and Frank Moore nearly nine minutes into the game. Cade Swygert then doubled the lead around the 13-minute mark with a strike from Nate Brown on the man advantage.
However, Calvin was able to tie the game by the end of the first, starting a string of five straight goals for the Knights. Calvin outshot Roosevelt 20-9 in the second period, but couldn't crack senior Nicholas Kotz for almost 17 minutes before taking the 3-2 lead. It took the Knights just 28 seconds to double their advantage and they added the fifth marker just 22 seconds into the third.
Roosevelt fought back valiantly after going down 5-2 with Lehet adding his second goal of the game, once again on the power play, at the midway point of the period. Chase Caravella added a goal from Quinn Haller and Tanner Hallett to make it a one-goal game with roughly three minutes left, but the Lakers could not find the equalizer in time. Moore and Gage McNeish added assists on Lehet's second goal of the game.
Paolo Suppa stood on his head at times Saturday despite the Lakers falling 3-2 for their fourth straight loss. Calvin scored just 3:20 into the contest to take an early lead before doubling the lead shortly before the midway point of the second period. The final five minutes of the second, though, were the game was ultimately decided as the Lakers tied the game then allowed the eventual game-winner all within a span of roughly two minutes.
Bdzoch struck first with a goal off the assist from Max Finner with 4:39 left in the second period. Elliott Fafinski tied the game with 3:06 left in the period off feeds from Andrew Werniak and Anthony Trankina. However, just 21 seconds after Roosevelt tied the game, the Knights retook the lead. Calvin iced the game with a strong third-period effort in which it outshot Roosevelt 16-10. Suppa finished with 40 stops on 43 shots in the game while the Lakers managed just 34 shots on goal during the contest,
Roosevelt closes out its regular season Saturday back in Bensenville against Purdue Northwest with a 7:30 p.m. faceoff.
