Men's Hockey Splits Weekend Road Series Versus Calvin
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Roosevelt University ACHA Division I men's hockey team split a weekend road series versus Calvin University (Mich.), winning 4-2 on Friday, November 5 and losing 4-2 on Saturday, November 6 at the Eagles Ice Center in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Lakers now own a 2-8 overall record this season.
In the weekend's first game on Friday night, the Lakers took an early 1-0 lead on Quin Haller's third goal of the season at the 1:23 mark with Tim Laskowksi earning the assist. However, the Knights pressured the RU goal throughout the first period, finding the equalizer at 13:47 and the game remained tied at 1-1 at the end of the period.
The second period belonged to the Lakers with Griffin Lehet scoring an unassisted goal, his second of the season, at 3:37 to regain the lead at 2-1. Just over a minute later, Jake Hermann lit the lamp with his second goal of the year to up the RU lead to 3-1 with Jozef Martancik picking up the assist, and the Lakers took that two-goal lead into the final period.
Halfway through the third period, Tanner Hallett tallied his third goal of the season on assists by Brett Dudek and Griffin Lehet to push the RU lead to 4-1. Calvin was able to pull a goal back on the power play at the 13:53 mark, but the Lakers and goaltender Nick Kotz kept the Knights off the board the rest of the way for the 4-2 victory.
In the series finale on Saturday afternoon, the Lakers struck first once again with Jozef Martancik tallying an unassisted goal at 9:08 in the first period for his second goal of the season. However, the Knights tied the game at 1-1 at 13:30 and the score remained that way at the first intermission.
The second period only saw one goal scored and unfortunately, the goal belonged to Calvin with just over a minute remaining in the period for a 2-1 score line going into the final stanza.
The Knights added to their lead with a goal at the 5:05 mark, but the Lakers cut the deficit to 3-2 on Jake Hermann's third goal of the year and second of the series with just under eight minutes left to play on an assist from Gage McNeish. However, Calvin restored its two-goal lead shortly after at 14:34 and finished off the contest for the 4-2 win.
