Gutierrez's Ace Helps Lakers Rocket Up Leaderboard At Egypt Valley
ADA, Mich. – Alvaro Pardo Gutierrez aced the 17th hole during his final round Tuesday to help spark the Lakers to a fifth-place finish at the Egypt Valley Championship at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Mich.
It was a rough start Monday for Roosevelt in its first of two rounds for the opening day as just two of the five players broke 80. The afternoon session was much better for the Lakers with everyone shooting 83 or better, but the team still found itself in sixth place after the first day of competition.
By the third round, the Lakers had a solid handle on the course and began their charge up the leaderboard with three rounds of 74 or better to finish in the tie for fifth. Individually, Thomas Peluchon continued his strong start to his freshman campaign with a second-place finish, two shots back of the medalist.
The French national was one shot off the lead after the first 18 holes Monday after carding a 73, and stayed one off the pace with a 72 in the second round. Although his 73 in the final round was good enough to overtake the second-round leader, a tournament-best 66 in the final round overtook Peluchon at the end.
Gutierrez struggled in Monday's two rounds after shooting 85 and 81, but he was ready to go in the final round Tuesday. His 69 was the second-best round of the day by any player and helped him move into 31st place overall after a rough Monday.
Charlie Curtis overcame an 86 in the first round to shoot 71 and 74 and climb into 21st position overall in the event. Marc Waller shot a pair of 79s on Monday before finishing with an 81 Tuesday to come in 38th place overall. Joep Guiting finished in 66th place to round out the Lakers lineup.
The Lakers will close out the fall season on Monday and Tuesday at the Whistling Straits Intercollegiate.
