Lakers Place Third At Holy Cross Event
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Roosevelt men's golf placed three players inside the top-10 en route to a third-place finish as a team at the Holy Cross Saints Classic on Monday and Tuesday in South Bend, Ind.
The Lakers came out firing in Monday's opening round with two of the three players tied for the lead after the first 18 holes. Freshman Thomas Peluchon struggled on the front nine with five bogeys and a single birdie, but responded on the back with two birdies to finish with a 3-over 74. Alvaro Pardo Gutierrez scored five birdies in his round to also shoot a 74 on the opening day.
Marc Waller aided the Roosevelt effort on the opening day with an eagle on the 10th hole to shoot a 6-over 77. Charlie Curtis was steady in shooting a 79 with four birdies on the day to give the Lakers a seven-shot lead after the first round.
Unfortunately for Roosevelt, the second round was not as kind as the Lakers shot 33-over par as a team to fall into third place. Waller actually shot one stroke better on Tuesday to finish in seventh place at 11-over overall. Peluchon fell into ninth position with an 80 and Gutierrez fell into a tie for 10th with an 81, leaving him at +13 for the event. Curtis finished a respectable 17th after shooting an 80 himself on the final day to finish 17-over.
Joep Guiting was the other Lakers golfer who shot better on the second day than the first, improving from a 15-over 86 on Monday to shooting an 83 on Tuesday. Justin Rodriguez and Matthew Webb both played in the event as individuals with their scores never counting toward the team score. Rodriguez had two birdies wiped out by an ugly 12th hole in the opening round to finish at +13 on Monday. Webb also had two birdies to shoot 85 on Monday, but both had rough days Tuesday with Rodriguez finishing in 50th place and Webb in 55th overall.
The Lakers will waste no time teeing off again as they begin a two-day tournament at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Mich. on Monday.
