Roosevelt Bounce Back With Second-Place Finish
METAMORA, Ill. – The Roosevelt men's golf team battled the winds and chilly conditions at Metamora Fields Golf Club to finish second at the Cougar Spring Invitational on Wednesday.
Nicolas Paviet returned to the lineup and played steady golf en route to a tie for second place individually with a 3-over for the two-round tournament. In Tuesday's opening round, the French national made three birdies to shoot a 2-over 73 and remain just two shots off the individual lead after the first round. He closed Wednesday's second round with two birdies in his last three holes to shoot a 72, the third-best round of the day.
Alvaro Pardo Gutierrez bounced back from an opening-round 77 to shoot a 73 on Wednesday to pull himself to a top-10 finish. The sophomore did not make a single birdie Tuesday, but sank a critical one on the 12th hole to grind out his score.
The pair were a major reason the Lakers entered Wednesday with a chance at the tournament title after ending the first round tied for the lead. However, some late bogies pushed Roosevelt down the leaderboard a bit and they finished 12 shots back of the winner with a team score of 39-over. Charlie Curtis and Jared Tjelmeland both had worse second rounds than first, although both managed to hang onto top-25 finishes.
Tjelmeland birdied two of the final three holes Tuesday to shoot a 5-over 76 in the opening round, the second-best round on the team for the first day of competition. However, an early double-bogey was the start of a tough round for the junior, who didn't make a single birdie en route to a 79 and a tie for 19th overall.
Curtis recovered from a double bogey on the first hole Wednesday to steady himself on the front nine, but he posted six bogeys on the back nine to shoot an 80 in the second round. The sophomore from Arizona shot a 77 in Tuesday's first round to sneak into a tie for 24th at 15-over for the tournament.
Joep Guiting shot a 90 to open the tournament then an 88 on Wednesday to close the tournament at 36 over par. He holed a birdie on the fifth hole Tuesday afternoon, but that was overshadowed by five holes in which he carded a double-bogey or worse. That was not the case Wednesday when he had just one double bogey in his round.
Roosevelt returns to the course from April 9-11 in Noblesville, Indiana at the Ken Partridge Invitational hosted at Purgatory Golf Club.
