Lakers Men’s Golf’s Finishes Fall Season at Whistling Straits

KOHLER, Wis. –The Roosevelt Lakers men's golf team wrapped up its fall season at the Whistling Straits Championship on October 17 and 18. The tournament, which featured an impressive field that included seven teams that are ranked or receiving votes nationally by the NAIA, was intended for 36-holes, but was shorted to just 18-holes as weather forced a cancellation of the second round on Tuesday.

During Monday's opening round, the Lakers battled heavy winds that made scoring difficult on the links-style course for the entire field. Jared Tjelmeland led the way for Roosevelt, posting a score of 82 that was good enough for sixth place individually. Alvaro Pardo Gutierrez, coming off an individual title at the CCAC Fall Preview, continued his strong play with an 85. Charlie Curtis added an 88 for the Lakers, while Trace McGuire and Joep Guiting rounded out the scoring with 96 and 104 respectively. The team total of 351 was good enough for eighth place overall.

"The course at Whistling Straits proved to be a formidable giant to conquer in our last fall tournament," said new head coach Don Morris. "The first day, 25 to 30 mile per hour wind gusts made the course a hostile environment. We ended up in the middle of the pack with superb round of 82 from Jared Tjelmeland. We were disappointed to have the second round cancelled due to the high winds, but we will be back at Whistling Straits and excited to prepare for the upcoming championship season in the spring"
