Lakers Take First Place in Olivet Nazarene University Spring Intercollegiate Men's Golf Tournament

ST. ANNE, Ill. – The Roosevelt University men's golf team finished in first place of the Olivet Nazarene University Spring Intercollegiate, besting second place and hosts Olivet Nazarene by seven strokes on Friday, March 25.  The event was held at Kankakee Elks Country Club in St. Anne, Ill. and was originally scheduled as a two-day event, but Saturday's competition was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The weather was less than ideal during Friday's play with temperatures in the mid-40's and winds gusting from 20 to 30 miles per hour.  In addition, rain was off and on throughout the day and sleet came down on the course for the last five holes of the competition. However, the Lakers showed resilience and battled through the conditions, topping the other five teams during the five and half hour event.

Leading the way was Alvaro Pardo Gutierrez, who shot a 77 to finish in second place individually, with Charlie Curtis and Jared Tjelmeland ending the day one stroke behind.  Curtis took third place and Tjelmeland fourth place after a scorecard playoff.

Nicolas Paviet shot a 79 to tie for seventh place, while Trace McGuire finished tied for 18th place with an 83 on the day.

"The boys battled today, especially the last five holes, and played some good golf," said Lakers Head Coach Peter Pougnet.  "We still have a lot of work and room to grow to become the team we want to be, but it was a good start."
