Men's Golf Wins CCAC Cup Championship to Close Out Historic Fall Season

LEMONT, Ill. – The Roosevelt University men's golf team competed in the CCAC Cup on Monday, October 18 and Tuesday, October 19, winning their fourth team tournament championship this fall season. The CCAC Cup was hosted by Holy Cross College (Ind.), but included all 10 teams from the CCAC Conference.

Coming off a victory last week at the Judson Aldeen Invitational, the Lakers were now at Ruffle Feathers Golf Club in Lemont, Ill., and even given perfect conditions, the course showed how hard target golf can be. The Lakers went on to post a two-shot victory with a team score of 606 (306, 300), besting second place St. Ambrose University (Iowa), who shot a team score of 608 over the two days.

The Lakers were led by Nicolas Paviet (77, 74), who finished in fifth place in the event, and it was the fourth event of the fall where Paviet finished inside the top-five individually.  Jared Tjelmeland (74, 78) finished seventh individually, while Charlie Curtis (72, 81) finished in a tie for eighth place. Rounding out the top five for RU were Cooper Carmody (83, 75) and Alvaro Pardo Gutierrez (86, 73), while Trace McGuire also competed in the tournament, finishing tied for 16th as an individual (75, 80).

This event caps off a historic fall season for the Lakers on the course. Out of the six tournaments they competed in, they won four team championships, including two individual championships, and their competitive record was 55-2 with the two loses coming to teams inside the top 10 national ranking.  In addition, the Lakers broke or tied 13 school records and the team is hoping to build on this success to be ready for their spring season.

"I'm so proud of the boys and how much heart they showed over the last couple of days," said Lakers Head Coach Peter Pougnet. "We knew this was going to be a tough golf course for us with how much target golf it is and we didn't have our best stuff, but they dug deep and found a way to our fourth team championship this fall. This was a program win for everyone involved, and I couldn't be happier for them and proud of how they continue to work."

Pougnet continued, "We are going to take some time and enjoy it, but we will sit down and assess things we need to work on and get some plans together of how we are going to be even better for our spring season."

The Lakers have seven tournaments lined up in the 2022 spring season, including the CCAC Conference Championship, where they look to defend their title from last spring.
