Men's Golf Opens New Season With Second Place Finish in Holy Cross Saints Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Roosevelt University men's golf team kicked off the 2021 fall season with a second place finish in the Saints Classic, hosted by Holy Cross College on August 30 and 31 at The Warren Golf Club in South Bend, Ind.

This was the defending CCAC Conference champion's first tournament of the 2021 fall season and their first time in competition since the NAIA National Championship this past May.

The Lakers shot a 297 on both days of competition for a two-day total of 594, finishing seven strokes behind tournament champion Missouri Valley College, who posted a score of 587.

Sophomore Charlie Curtis led the Lakers with a 146 total (73, 73), tying for fourth place individually.

The Lakers had three more in the top 10 as well, with junior Nicolas Paviet finishing in seventh with a 149 (76, 73).  Sophomore Alvaro Pardo Gutierrez (74, 76) and junior Cooper Carmody (74, 76) tied for ninth place with a 150, and rounding out the lineup was sophomore Jared Tjelmeland (89, 75) with a 164.

Although not satisfied with a second place finish, Lakers Head Coach Peter Pougnet found plenty of positives to take away from this first event.

"Having four guys in the top 10, along with two team scores under 300, is a great start to this season," said Pougnet.  "I'm proud of how Charlie played as he worked extremely hard this summer.  I'm looking forward to having a good focused week of practice and getting down to the Player's Club Invitational to compete in another really strong field."

The Lakers are back in action next weekend at the Player's Club Invitational, hosted by Taylor University, at Player's Club in Yorktown, Ind., on September 10 and 11.
