Montes, Stevensen Named NAIA Scholar-Athletes
CHICAGO – Roosevelt men's basketball players Julio Montes II and Shane Stevensen were named Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes, the organization announced Wednesday.
It is the first honor for both players, who have excelled in the classroom and on the court for the Lakers. Montes led Roosevelt in scoring at 15.2 points per game and shot 43 percent from the field, including 42 percent from 3-point range, this season. He also added a team-best 3.7 assists per game while leading the Lakers to their first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship this season as a captain.
Stevensen featured in 17 games, including three starts, and averaged 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game this season. The redshirt sophomore scored in double figures four times in calendar year 2024 and had six rebounds in both CCAC Tournament games for the Lakers.
Per the NAIA, the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete programs recognize excellence in the classroom by NAIA-member student-athletes who are juniors or above in academic standing with a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Students must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended one full year at the institution. The awards are given annually to outstanding student-athletes in the various sports in which the program is active and their respective teams are eligible for NAIA postseason competition.
