Lakers Stay Hot In Win Over Jaguars

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Roosevelt led wire-to-wire to cruise to a 76-67 win over Governors State on Wednesday night in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup in University Park.

The Lakers (8-1, 2-0 CCAC) scored on three of their first four possessions to open up a 6-0 lead and they never looked back, leading for all but 31 seconds of the action. For much of the game, Roosevelt held a comfortable advantage, but Governors State rallied to cut the deficit to three points with four minutes left.

Maurice Commander took over the game at that point with 3-pointers on consecutive possessions then adding a layup a minute later as part of a personal 8-0 run. The graduate student finished with 29 points and six rebounds as one of three Lakers to finish in double figures. After a slow start to the season, Commander made 6 of 11 from behind the arc against the Jaguars, accounting for half of the 3-pointers Roosevelt made in the game.

Julio Montes II scored 13 points and he was matched by Forte Prater, who also dished out nine assists. Cody Mitchell secured nine rebounds to go along with seven points while Malcolm Townsel scored nine points and grabbed seven boards. Roosevelt made its mark with 14 points off 11 takeaways while shooting 44 percent from the field.

The Lakers return to action Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they host Calumet St. Joseph at the Goodman Center for more CCAC action.
