Lakers Set To Begin League of Legends Season
CHICAGO — The Roosevelt University League of Legends team begins its season Wednesday against Ontario Tech Student Union.
The Lakers were among the best teams in the regular season last year with a perfect 7-0 mark in the North Open Conference regular season, but were upset in the first round of the postseason. Captain Leswin Ramirez will look to improve upon the playoffs performance as he enters his third season with the Lakers. He said he was excited about the culture the team built last season, and is hoping to build on that while instilling a sense of competition in the players.
"Last year was focused on setting a baseline for our players, giving them a feel of competition at a higher level." Ramirez said. "This year, our goal is to push much further beyond that and really show that the Lakers have been putting in the work to be able to excel."
League of Legends focuses heavily around setting up carry players, so the Lakers will be relying on freshman support Andrew Miller to quickly build chemistry with his teammates. This is especially important for junior AD Carry Jeremy Garzon, who is coming off a dominant season in 2022-23 with a team-best Kill-Death Ratio of 4.66. Garzon will continue to be a central figure in determining the Lakers' playstyle along with fellow returners Justin Magale and Logan Micheletto, who will both prove key in facilitating advantages around the map.
Along with the returning faces of last season, Ramirez said he was excited to see how freshman Jungler Carlos Leon would fit into the team on offense. Ramirez noted that very few players put in the effort of Leon, and he is "excited to see what he can do with us."
Season matches are currently set to take place on Wednesdays and weekends over the course of the fall semester, with featured matches being visible from the Lakers' point of view on https://twitch.tv/rooseveltlakersesports.
