Morales Named CCAC Pitcher Of Week After Shutout Effort

CHICAGO – Angel Morales was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference's Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 4, the league announced Tuesday.

The junior righty from Chicago threw a four-hit, complete-game shutout against Northwestern on March 5 in a dominant 7-0 win for the Lakers. The performance came shortly after the Raiders defeated Roosevelt 17-1 and kickstarted a three-game winning streak to close the Lakers' trip to Florida over spring break.

Morales struck out just one batter, but didn't issue any walks and allowed just two of the five base runners in the game to reach second. Two of the four hits against him came in the opening inning before retiring the next 10 batters he faced and faced the minimum in every inning until the seventh.

It is the first weekly award of Morales' career and the first this season for the Lakers. Roosevelt had two Players of the Week and two Pitchers of the Week last season.

"Angel really came out and pitched very well for us after a tough loss," Roosevelt head coach Jason Becker said. "He supplied the energy we needed to get a big win and build some momentum during the week. He was outstanding and his teammates played great behind him as well."

The Lakers (9-6) will open conference play Friday afternoon at Ozinga Field as they welcome Trinity Christian for Roosevelt's home-opening doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
