Lakers Tripped Up By Morningside

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Roosevelt put up three runs in the first inning, but that was all the Lakers could muster in a 9-3 loss to Morningside on Sunday in Auburndale, Fla.

It was an electric first inning for the Lakers (6-5) after they sent all nine players to the plate in the frame. Jojo Mack and Bryce Hayman led off the inning with singles then Kekoa Ogawa sent a deep fly to centerfield for an RBI sacrifice fly. Luis Delgado drew a walk then a fielder's choice put runners at the corner for James Berry and Sammy Estrada to hit consecutive run-scoring singles.

The Lakers mustered four of their five hits in the game in the opening frame in addition to their only three runs. The Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the first before Kellan Turner settled down and finished with just three earned runs against in five innings. He also struck out five while walking just one, but was saddled with the loss after departing the game with a 5-3 deficit.

Jack Kieffer had Roosevelt's only other hit in the game with a third-inning single then also drew a walk in the fifth. Berry was the Lakers' only other base runner after getting hit by a pitch right after Kieffer's single.

Roosevelt will have Monday off before facing Northwestern in a doubleheader at Sanford Stadium in Sanford, Fla.
