Lakers Stumble In Rain Against Fighting Bees

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – A pair of unlucky bounces gave St. Ambrose the momentum to edge past Roosevelt 3-0 in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference match on rainy Wednesday at Morris Field.

The Fighting Bees scored their first goal on a shot that banked in off the far post after some excellent goalkeeping from Roxana Herrera kept the game scoreless for the first 35 minutes. St. Ambrose then added a second right before halftime when the Lakers blocked a shot and it ricocheted over Herrera. The third goal came just seconds into the second half.

Roosevelt (4-7-0, 2-5-0 CCAC) never found much offense against the Fighting Bees, mustering just five shot attempts in the game. Both of the Lakers' shots on target came in the first half when Mayte Gongora had her long-range effort pushed over the bar and Karen Salgado had her shot easily grabbed by the keeper.

Herrera made six saves in goal before being substituted out in the 79th minute. Roosevelt did defend set pieces quite well, not allowing St. Ambrose to do much of anything on its 10 corner kicks. The Lakers also defended well in front of Herrera to limit the Fighting Bees to just 20 shot attempts despite much of the game being played on Roosevelt's half of the field.

The Lakers return to action Saturday evening in Joliet against St. Francis at 5:00 p.m. for a CCAC matchup.
