
Men's Basketball Holds Off St. Francis For Important 72-67 CCAC Conference Victory
JOLIET, Ill. – The Roosevelt University men's basketball team came through with an important CCAC Conference victory, defeating the University of St. Francis by the score of 72-67 on Monday, February 7 at the Sullivan Center. The win raised the Lakers conference record to 11-7 and their overall record to 16-9 on the year.
The Lakers opened up the game with back-to-back layups from Matt Myers and Justus Mouton to take a quick 4-0 lead. However, the Fighting Saints went on a 15-2 run to take a 15-6 advantage with just over 15 minutes left in the opening half. Roosevelt came right back with 11 straight points to regain the lead at 17-15 with 12:53 remaining, capped off by consecutive three-pointers by Trenton Kyler and Lucas Jordan. The two teams traded the lead for the next seven minutes before the Lakers went back ahead and built a 37-28 lead with 1:53 to go, ending the first half holding a 40-33 lead.
Roosevelt pushed its lead to double digits in the first few minutes of the second half, but St. Francis cut the margin to 47-44 just over three minutes in. The Lakers held the lead for the majority of the second half before the Fighting Saints evened the game up at 57-57 with 7:03 left to play and then regained the lead, vaulting ahead for a 63-58 advantage with 5:24 remaining in the game.
The visitors made a late push and went back in front 66-65 on an Ayomide Ajiboye layup with 3:10 to play with Myers extending the lead to 68-65 on a jump shot just under a minute later. St. Francis got back to within a point at 68-67 with 1:22 left, but the Lakers held the home team off the board the rest of the way and got another Ajiboye layup and two clutch free throws from Kyler in the final seconds to clinch the conference victory.
